Do You See How Big the Sea Is - شايف البحر شو كبير,

mixed media animation (excerpt), video, sound, 2-channel projection, 2024

Do You See How Big the Sea Is - شايف البحر شو كبير, stems from a single photograph of my father and uncle just before boarding a bus and leaving Lebanon in 1973.  My grandmother, who reluctantly joined, did not want to be photographed as she mourned the departure of her two sons. The piece includes a life-sized figurative projection surface onto which an animated sequence is mapped. The figures are replaced throughout the sequence with transparency, collage, archival photography, and live-action video. A carousel of imagery is projected on the wall behind the figures, moving in and out of different contexts and destabilizing our sense of place and memory.
